Travel Tips

Here a few things we've found that make our lives just a little bit easier when we travel. Have something we should add to the list? Let us know in the comments!

TRAVEL TIPS

  • I'm a fan of TSA precheck, and digital boarding passes, but you do you.
  • I also don't check a bag unless I have to, but again, personal preference.
  • If you travel frequently (like more than 6x/year), I think it's worth it to join the lounge for the airline you fly most often. It saves you money on meals, and it's a nice quiet place for the inevitable delays to take a call or charge your stuff. You can pay with miles, so it's basically free.

PACKING TIPS

  • Make a packing list so you don't get where you're going and realize you've forgotten something important
    • I use the same list every time and just skip the things I don't need for that particular trip
    • I have a separate list for the beach, international travel, etc.
  • Keep duplicates of oft-used items (toiletries, makeup, etc.) just for travel
    • For me, this includes the above, plus meds, chargers, turbitwists and allergy pillowcases.

HOTEL TIPS

  • Anytime you book at any hotel, be sure you're signed up for their loyalty program. It's free, and you can earn all kinds of perks from free wifi and/or drinks to free stays.
  • Kindness and a smile will get you a long way, but be sure to tip, too. That means anyone who walks you to your room, helps with luggage, delivers anything to you, etc. etc.
  • Once in your room, take a quick look around and ask for anything you might need quickly. Whether it's extra hanger, a fridge, or a fan, ask now rather than spend the rest of the trip uncomfortable or waiting.
    • If you do need a fridge, if it's for dietary needs, it's free. So whether you're a nursing mother or you have to buy your own food, do what you need to do and don't pay some exorbitant amount for it.
  • Don't unpack until you're sure you're satisfied with your room. Nothing's worse than settling in and THEN noticing there's no water pressure, the toilet doesn't flush, it smells like smoke, the TV doesn't work, etc.
  • Once I'm settled in, I put a sticky note over the peephole (#safetyfirst) and then get unpacked and settled in.
    • I take photos of my room and upload them to TraffickCam, which helps identify where victims of human trafficking are being held.
    • I use the stayconnect app (see below) to control my TV without the remote and avoid touching it throughout my stay, but if that's not available, I'll pop that filthy thing into the bag that's in the ice bucket so I can still use it without getting Hep C.
  • I also travel with an eyemask and ear plugs because hotels can be noisy depending on location (busy city streets) and time of year / clientele (read: bachelorette parties and spring breakers). But you know that pesky light that always seems to seep through the curtains? BINDER CLIP. If you don't have one on you (because you're not QUITE to my level of crazy), take a spare pants hanger from the closet, turn it vertical, and voila! Curtain clip. You're WELCOME.
  • ALWAYS use the extra locks once you're in room, as soon as you get in, no matter what.
